Hello one and all,
I hope this update finds you all happy and healthy and dry (we've had a number of wet days in a row). This has been an exciting week as high school football kicked off around our fine province. For football fans it feels like New Years Day!
We were fortunate to mic up coach Barry Rawlyk (coach of the Holy Cross Crusaders) for his home opener against the E.D. Feehan Trojans a week ago Thursday. He even allowed us to film the guys as they sat in the change room at Gordie Howe Bowl waiting for the Falcon/Guardians game to end (congrats to coach Eng on the big win).
The game was super exciting, being Freshie week and all. Tons of fans, hyper kinetic crowd and the game was terrific as well. Nothing compares with high school football when it comes to pure excitement.
Last Saturday was a very busy day for us as we covered both the Huskie and Hilltop games. Before the Huskie game began we interviewed Eric Tillman and Frank McCrystal. Eric shared some fascinating info about his formative years growing up in Miississippi while Frank gave us some personal thoughts on Gord Currie.
Before the game we also went into the Huskie and Ram locker rooms and filmed the guys getting ready mentally and emotionally for the game. I can't believe how small the old Huskie dressing room is. It was claustrophobic in there. The game was exciting and intense. A big thanks to coach Cal Hobbs for letting us mic him up for the game.
The Hilltop game was amazing! Talk about melodrama. The Toppers kicked a field goal with no time remaining to squeak out a 34-31 win. Afterwards we interviewed both Shane Dueck and Kyle Pascoe of the Hilltops, to get their thoughts on the win.
This past Thursday we drove to Hague for their tilt with archrivals Rosthern. Coach Clay Kirby allowed us to mic him up and we went behind closed doors to film Clay giving his players a pre-game speech. The game itself was hard-hitting and intense. Those rural boys can play ball! Tim Kroeker was the head official for the game. Imagine that, he's officiated four CFL games this year and we caught him officiating 6-man football in Hague Saskatchewan!
The Hague Panthers won the game by a bunch and we interviewed Mitch Fehr (safety and tailback) and Jeff Penner (center and defensive tackle) after their big win. Friday night's game between Holy Cross and Aden Bowman has been postponed until Monday, that's going to be one of the bigger games we're following this fall.
All in all it has been another exciting two weeks. The documentary is starting to take shape in my head and it is looking good, really good. Thanks for all your support. We'll talk to you in a couple of weeks.
