November 11, 2006 Update

Hello one and all,

This week has been emotional. On Friday we (my family and I) attended my wife Michelle's aunts funeral in Cochin (just north of North Battleford). She was only 65, that's practically middle aged by today's standards. And of course today is Remembrance Day, there's an inspiring article on the cover of the Star Phoenix about a man who fought in World War 2.

We went to Hague this morning for the last six-man football game of 2006. It was almost everything we could have hoped for, big plays, big hits, lots of scoring. Unfortunately, the Hague Panthers came up one quarter short of winning their first provincial championship. They played the Kelleher Cobras, and boy were they good. They had a middle linebacker/fullback/kicker/punter (#98) and he was the difference. He made big plays on defense, and even bigger plays on offense catching the ball, running with the ball and kicking the ball.

We interviewed him (I don't recall his name) along with his coach after the game. He was genuinely humble and appreciative of what he had accomplished. It made me so proud that we've been covering six-man football this season. I'm also extremely proud of our Hague Panthers. Clay and Stu-ee run a top-notch program with grace and dignity, way to go boys!

After today's final we sped down the highway and caught the trophy and medal presentation for the 4A championship at Griffiths Stadium. In case you haven't heard, the Sheldon Spartans won the game 24-23 on the final play of the game. We had the good fortune of interviewing Larry and Mark Mueller. Mark was the starting quarterback of the Spartans, he's also Ron Lancaster's grandson.

Mark and Larry became very emotional when I asked about the significance of this championship, winning it together. There were lots of tears and hugs, I shed some tears as well and got hugged by both father and son after the interview. It was a moment.

It's cool that we're going to be in Green Bay next weekend interviewing Jon Ryan, who incidentally won a 4A provincial championship with.you guessed it, the Sheldon Spartans. Speaking of Green Bay, Jim Hopson suggested we try to interview the equipment manager of the Packers, Red Batting. He's originally from Montreal. Rob Crane of the Packers informed us that Red usually doesn't do interviews but since we were from Canada he said he'd let us interview him. Thanks for the tip Jim and thanks for asking Red to do the interview Rob. Our weekend down south is shaping up nicely but we'll be thinking about our Saskatchewan Huskies while we're down there. They played a nearly flawless game today in Winnipeg beating the previously unbeaten and number one ranked team in the nation (the Manitoba Bisons), 32-15. I'm picturing the smile on Hugh Vassos' face as I write this. Congrats to B.T. , the coaching staff and of course the players of the Huskies.

Good luck to the Riders tomorrow, and good luck to the Huskies next weekend in Ottawa. I'm sure I'll have lots to write about after our weekend at Lambeau Field and Notre Dame Stadium.

Regards,
