March 5, 2008 Update

Hi Everyone,

I just looked at our last update and it was nearly three months ago, yikes! Chris and I have been busy working on our next film, “Run”, a story about a First Nations family dealing with F.A.S.D. (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder). I actually wrote the play version last year and my drama class at Nutana Collegiate performed it at the Hanley Regional Drama Festival. Writing the screenplay has been more challenging than I thought it would be as I’m making some major changes to the script.

Back to football. We’re in the process of setting up our Season of Dreams Rural Tour. This is very, very exciting for us for two reasons. Firstly, Chris and I dreamed of doing a rural tour from the very beginning because the film follows the Hague Panthers, a six- man football team. Secondly, we get to give back to the communities as 60% of the ticket sales go directly back to the local football teams as well as 20% of the DVD sales. The teams that have booked the Season of Dreams Rural Tour so far include the Lumsden Devils, Gull Lake Lions, Biggar Blazers, Nipawin Bears, Lloydminister Raiders, Big River Rebels and the Wynyard Golden Bears.

There are a number of other schools interested in the tour. We need to thank our tireless tour coordinator, Sheila (my Mom). She’s done an amazing job getting in touch with coaches for us. Thanks Mom! On another note, I just received a terrific letter from a football coach from Ontario that I’d like to share with you. It further demonstrates that what we do in Saskatchewan is unique and special when it comes to football.

Tom,
Congratulations on your film. I have admired the passion that your province has towards football since I saw several busloads of fans roll into Oshawa to watch the Hilltops win the Canadian Championship years ago. Your film only deepened my admiration. This film is something that I have waited years for someone to make, and I look forward to showing it to my High School football team as a motivational tool. Shamefully, there are few high schools, here in Ontario, under 900 students that have football programs. Watching Season of Dreams has motivated me to take steps to introduce 6-man football to Ontario where rural schools are suffering from declining enrolment. Thanks.

We keep getting emails like the one from Mike Rumleski and it makes our day! Oh, I almost forgot, we’ve also been asked to have our film shown at the Yorkton International Short Film Festival in May. The screening is happening on Thursday, May 22nd. It’s a real privilege and honour to be asked. That’s all I have for now. I hope all is well in your world. Feel free to drop me a note anytime.

Warm Regards,
