February 19, 2007 Update

Dear Friends,

Over the last three weeks or so Chris and I have started the arduous task of editing Season of Dreams. Taking the first step is harder than it looks. So far we've edited the first 15 minutes of the movie. That may seem inconsequential to you but to us it is a huge step. We now know where we are going!

Speaking of the front end, Chris came up with a brilliant idea to start the movie and it is compelling to say the least. Anyone who has ever been involved with football will love it. It's been strangely surreal to look at footage we shot twelve months ago and realize it fits exactly where we need it.

This past week we stopped by Wayne Shaw's bookstore just off Broadway to interview him. I first met Wayne at the 40th anniversary celebrations for the Riders first Grey Cup in Regina. I saw him again at the Top of the Inn for the Hilltops 60th anniversary banquet. For some reason it didn't feel right to interview him at either venue. When we interviewed him last week among his books it was the right thing to do. For those of you who know Wayne he is a fascinating man to interview, both brilliant and random at the same time.

On the weekend I was in Regina holidaying with my family, water sliding and spending time at the Science Centre. As part of our trip I stopped by Taylor Field and interviewed quarterback Kent Austin. I realize he's the new head coach of the Riders, but to me he is still "Kent Austin Riders quarterback". Kent was relaxed, personable and fun to talk to. It makes me wonder what some of the interviews with coaches would have been like if we'd interviewed them when the heat wasn't on. My son Brett and I were also given permission to film Taylor Field and it was beautiful to see the snow covering the artificial turf like a blanket.

We also stopped by Access Communications to pick up a copy of the 4A provincial football championship game played between the Sheldon Williams Spartans and the Evan Hardy Souls. A big thanks to Gursh Madhur for providing us with the DVD of the game, it was a barnburner! A big thank you is also in order for Glenn Reid of CBC sports in Regina. Glenn did a fantastic five-minute video on George Reed for the Dogs Breakfast last year. I liked it so much that I asked Glenn for permission to use excerpts of it for our documentary. Glenn obliged and gave me a DVD of it on Friday. Well I've got to get back to editing. We are hoping to have the movie ready to go by the end of May. We'll keep you posted as usual. Take care.
