Hi everyone,
I know this update is a week early but I thought I'd write to you before school begins tomorrow. This past week we traveled to Hague and filmed the boys as they prepared for the upcoming season. On Wednesday Clay Kirby had the boys practice, attend a barbeque, followed by another practice. After the second practice we followed one of the players, Mitch, around the farm as he did chores and milked cows for four hours (all in a days work for a farm boy).
We attended the Hilltops 60th anniversary banquet at the Top of the Inn on Saturday and caught Howard Nixon on tape musing about the good 'ol days. We interviewed an old elementary school chum of mine, Larry Wruck. Although he had a stellar CFL career, it hasn't gone to his head. He's still a sincere guy from Sutherland.
We interviewed Don Necker, a director of the Hilltops since 1967 and a proud member of the organization since 1950, that's 56 years of service, hard to believe. We chatted with Al Ledingham, former player and coach of the Hilltops and Jim Hopson spoke glowingly of Junior football and the Hilltops organization while wearing a Hilltops golf shirt, Mr. Currie would be disappointed Jim!
Today we attended the Hilltop game versus the Winnipeg Rifles. They did a nice tribute to the Alumni at halftime. Before the game we interviewed Blaine Knoll. An interesting statistic he gave me just blew Chris and I away. In his seventeen years of coaching at Evan Hardy they made it to the city championship game fifteen times and won eleven city titles. They also won six provincial championships. Those are serious John Wooden kind of numbers (he coached the UCLA Bruins to a number of NCAA basketball titles in the 60's and 70's).
At halftime we interviewed Dave Hardy. Dave lives in Vancouver and is the principal of a prestigious private high school. He told us there are only two high school football teams in the city of Vancouver, and they are both private high schools. Hard to believe. Anyways, I'm back to school tomorrow at Nutana. Will continue to update you as the project progresses. If you have any tips or ideas for "Season of Dreams" you know where I live.
Regards,
Tom Simes
