Hi everyone,
I just got back last night from my one-month excursion to Canmore where I teach "Movie Making in the Mountains" with my two oldest kids, Brett and Brooklyn. We had a wonderful time but after 32 days of living in our camper we were ready to be back home.
Three weeks ago, and that feels like an eternity ago, Chris and I had the privilege of experiencing the 40th anniversary of the Roughriders first Grey Cup win. Thanks to the amazing support of Ryan Whippler (marketing guru for the Riders) we pretty much filmed everything we wanted and needed for our documentary. I'll give you some of the highlights to let you know what I mean.
On Saturday morning of the celebration weekend we interviewed a mother and daughter who had season tickets going back to the 1920's! They shared some wonderful stories and gave us a female perspective on Saskatchewan's love affair with football. From there we went to the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and met up with all of the players. We interviewed Tom Wright (CFL commissioner) in front of the Grey Cup and made plans to interview some of the Rider legends at the game later in the evening.
We arrived at the game three hours early to take some shots and hopefully to interview some of the CBC commentators. They didn't arrive so we interviewed two of the Saskatchewan Roughrider cheerleaders (rough gig but someone has to do it!). Finally the CBC crew arrived so we interviewed Steve Armitage and Chris Walby. During the game we took shots of three longtime fans enjoying the game.
At halftime we interviewed Ron Lancaster, Al Ford, Dale West (a former Bedford Road Redmen!) and Hugh Campbell. All of the guys were gracious and patient with us.
All in all it was a magical day, thanks to the generous support of the Riders.
This month we plan to cover the 60th anniversary of the Hilltops, interview Ron Atchison, Wayne Shaw and maybe some younger guys like Larry Wruck. We're going to film some of the Hilltop alumni game and get to know the players we're covering this fall from Hague and Holy Cross a little better. We're hoping to interview coach Towriss and we're also going to Regina to check out the start of the Ram training camp around August 19th and hopefully interview some of the athletes and coaches of the Regina Thunder. Things are getting more exciting as we go along and we appreciate your support. As always, please give us ideas for our project if you have them.
Regards,
Tom Simes
