April 27th, 2008 Update

Dear Friends,

We’re coming to the end of our Season of Dreams Rural Tour and it’s been a fascinating ride. There have been highs and lows and everything in between. A definite high for both Chris and I was going to Gull Lake and screening the movie at the Gull Lake movie theatre. Neal Boutin and his coaching staff, Walter from the movie theatre, along with the people of Gull Lake were terrific hosts and reminded me why I enjoy rural hospitality so much. Gull LakeIt seemed like the town had shut down for the event and that feeling of suspended time was refreshing. On the downside, two of our tour dates did not work out. I also felt bad for the coaches who had poured time and resources into this project only to see a small turnout. I now realize in hindsight that the tour was really a high-risk venture because the populations of most of the towns were very small.

We have a performance in Delisle on Thursday night and we’re excited about that because Clay Kirby is the principal out there and my good buddy, Ken Byers is the head coach. This coming Thursday, Friday and Saturday we have purchased a booth at the Man Show to sell Season of Dreams DVD’s. My father-in-law Glenn Lowes is heading up this event for us and both Chris and I are very appreciative of his efforts. The Future Shop has donated a Sony 46’’ LCD screen for us to show the trailer and movie while patrons pass our booth. A big thank you to Chantelle from the Future Shop for her positive support. If you’re at the Man Show this weekend, go by the booth and say hi to Glenn.

Hugh Vassos is still working on getting Season of Dreams on TSN. Chris has edited the movie down to a lean mean 47 minutes long. This also includes a couple of current interviews with Ken Miller, the new head coach of the Riders and Gene Makowsky. We asked the guys how winning the Grey Cup has changed their lives and how it's impacted the province. Ken also shared with us his experience playing six-man football in rural Oregon. I found Ken to be much more animated and warm in person than I imagined him seeing him on T.V. (if that makes sense).

This past week I mailed a cheque out to Huskie Athletics for $2230.00. The proceeds will go towards the football team. We donated five dollars from the sale of every DVD sold at Huskie Stores to the team. As well we donated $2450.00 to Football Saskatchewan from DVD sales and proceeds from the TCU World Premiere (November 13th). It's been a pleasure to give back to these two stellar organizations that have contributed to the rich history of football here in Saskatchewan.

On another note, we’re deep into pre-production of our second film, Run. I’ve been re-writing the script numerous times, trying to get it just right. I’ve screen tested a number of actors for roles and we’ve filled most of the principle roles. We’re still looking for an actor to play the role of Anna Littletent. If you know of a female between the ages of 50 and 65 who is interested in acting in a film please send her my way (934-1535). I’d love to screen test her, no prior film experience is necessary. The pre-production has been a blast and Chris and I are very excited to be working with two very talented artists, Tim Halstrom (lighting and set design) and Brady Blackmon (sound design). We’re filming the majority of the movie the last two weeks of July at a farm near Laird. We’ll keep you posted, hopefully we can get a theatrical release with this film, we gotta keep reaching for the stars! It’s time to go, thanks for listening to my ramblings.

Sincerely,

Tom Simes
